Our family never misses an episode of Gutfeld!--the King of Late Night. We look forward to hearing what comical quip Greg Gufeld will use to introduce his "massive sidekick," Tyrus.
Even with no training in the field of journalism, Tyrus's commentary is usually some of the sagest and most insightful analysis you will hear, even among a guest panel of seasoned journalists.
How did a pro wrestler end up being a political commentator? Tyrus's book explains it all, and when you hear his life story, you will be amazed to learn how the school of hard knocks built him into the man he is today.
Just Tyrus: A Memoir Synopsis
George Murdoch, aka Tyrus, was born to a white mother and a black father. To say that his childhood was dysfunctional is an understatement. His father was an abusive man who had no interest in sticking around for his children. After his parents' divorce, Tyrus and his brother were raised by loving foster parents who hoped to adopt them, but just when life started feeling normal, his biological mother whisked her boys off to California, and the dysfunction resumed.
Everywhere George went, he encountered a bully, but after physically defeating these bullies, they usually became good friends.
George's mother remarried an awful man who treated him abominably. George continued to grow and become stronger, so by age 16, when he was challenged by his stepdad, George defended himself, and the stepdad wound up in the hospital. From that moment on, George couch surfed his way through high school, unable to return home.
Unsure what his future would hold after graduation, George did whatever he could to survive. He played football, ran drugs, and bounced at multiple clubs until he landed a steady job working as the bodyguard for Snoop Dog, a position that would allow him to travel the world.
George's dream, however, had always been to be in the WWE. His dream became a reality, though the journey was rocky. He was eventually fired from the WWE but continued to pursue other wrestling opportunities.
Retweeting one of Gutfeld's hilarious posts caught the attention of the late-night host, and Tyrus was offered a spot on the show. Though many thought he would be just a "big, dumb wrestler," he surprised everyone with his talent, hilarious one-liners, brutal honesty, and keen observations. He brings a completely different perspective to the show than any other guest.
Thoughts on Just Tyrus: A Memoir
For those of us fortunate enough to grow up in happy homes with relatively normal and stable lives, it's a little hard to read Tyrus's story. It hurts the heart to imagine a child suffering the things he describes. Tyrus basically raised himself, but along the way, he was blessed to encounter mentors who helped him become a better man.
Tyrus dedicates this book to "all the lost boys." His story offers hope that no matter how rough a person's life has been, they can rise above adversity and be successful in life.
Even though Tyrus limits how deeply he will allow the reader to dive into his personal life, his story is still raw, straightforward, and authentic.
If you enjoy watching Tyrus on Gutfeld! or in the ring, you will appreciate this book because it offers a glimpse into the man behind the brand he has created for himself.
Aside from some profanity (several F-bombs) and a few typos the editors missed, Just Tyrus: A Memoir is a quick read. You can hear his voice in your head as you go. I would liked to have learned about his wife, his children from multiple relationships, and how things stand now with his mom and extended family, but those insights aren't included.
This book will give you a better understanding of how Tyrus's life experiences have shaped him into who he is today, and when you listen to his political commentary, you will know where he's coming from.
A Sequel Is Also Available!
If you enjoy
Just Tyrus: A Memoir, he picks the story back up in his latest book,
Nuff Said. In the sequel, Tyrus shares more of his life experiences in order to connect them to his views on hot-button issues our country is facing today, such as immigration, crime, politics, and so much more. Just like the first book,
Nuff Said is written in his same down-to-earth style.
